Gary Player said the more you practise, the luckier you get, and I believe the same applies to winning awards. While I have not set out to do work specifically with awards in mind, I am grateful that my work has been recognised as worthy of them by my peers in industry.
I have won awards across Media platforms (radio, television, and online), in Education, and in Communications - and I look forward to more!
Breakin new ground for RhodesUniversity
The MACE (Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Education) Excellence Awards take place annually and recognise and celebrate excellence and the achievements of specialists and practitioners in marketing, advancement and communication in the higher-education sector. In 2024, Rhodes University won its first-ever MACE award for its social media campaign for 'In conversation: Four decades of artworks by current and former staff of the Rhodes University Fine Art Department,’ which was part of the main Curated Programme of the National Arts Festival (NAF) in Makhanda.
2022 SA Press Club Radio News Journalist of the Year
I received the SA Press Club’s Journalist of the Year award in t he category Rdio News for 2022 for my reporting on Jacaranda FM News on Operation Dudula and xenophobia.
SANParks Kudu Award
In 2018, I won a South African National Parks (SANParks) Kudu Award for environmental journalism in the television broadcast category for a series of pieces I produced for eNCA on the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site. Environmental news tends to be polarised and my stories aimed to create synergies between the land, the people, the culture, and economic development for modern times, as it did for the ancient people of Mapungubwe.

IAB SA Bookmark Award
In 2016 I won an IAB SA Bookmark Award for online feature writing for a body of work. Most of the work entered was done collaboratively as I had embarked on a project as Digital News Production Editor for the SABC to empower my colleagues to produce quality, in-depth, multimedia-rich work for the online space. I also leveraged relationships with other SABC journalists in a bid to break down the barriers between traditional and new media platforms, with some of this work being included in the Bookmark Award entry.
